Mars Multisales Africa (Mars) is encouraging corporate South Africa to welcome the furry family members of its employees for a weeklong celebration of dogs, called Take Your Dog to Work Week (TYDTWW). TYDTWW celebrates the benefits of bringing our furry friends to the workplace with a range of activities happening between 17th June – 21st June 2019.
TYDTWW was first celebrated in 1999 as ‘Take Your Dog to Work Day’ (TYDTWD) by Pet Sitters International (PSI) to celebrate the great companions dogs make and promote their adoption. The day is aimed at encouraging employers to experience the joys of pets in the workplace for one day to support their local pet communities.
As a global leader in Petcare, Mars is passionate about pets and knows that having a pet friendly workplace is good for both employees and their dogs. Dogs in the office can offer a sense of comfort, relieve stress, increase physical activity and even improve productivity and happiness. In 2017, Mars globally resolved to amplify PSI’s TYDTWD by making it a long week campaign.
“At Mars, we are deeply committed to creating a better world for pets. We practice what we preach by having a pet-friendly workplace, and often have dogs in our office,” said Tumi Masekela, Director of Corporate Affairs at Mars Multisales Africa. This Take Your Dog to Work Week, Mars has also partnered with Woodrock Animal Rescue Shelter to encourage corporates to invite the shelter to their office and adopt a furry friend.
“Pets provide unconditional and non-judgmental love,” says, Stella Meldau, founder and Managing Director of Woodrock Animal Rescue. “A pet can decrease depression, stress and anxiety, they can lower blood pressure, improve immunity and even decrease risk of heart attack and stroke. We are pleased to have corporates open their doors to our furry friends at Woodrock and offer some much relief from everyday struggles.”
Research conducted by Waltham Research Centre for Pet Nutrition, a subsidiary of Mars Inc, has shown that having dogs in the workplace has a positive impact on employees.
The top five areas of improvements as a result of implementing pet-friendly policies include:
- Employee morale
- Reduced stress among employees
- Work-life balance
- Greater loyalty to the company
- Reduced guilt among pet owners about leaving their pets at home
Mars would like South African corporates to take part in this global initiative and share photos on social media using the hashtag #PetsforPeople and #TYDTWW. Corporates are welcome to reach out to @EdelmanAfrica on Twitter and arrange for Woodrock Animal Rescue to visit their workplace for some furry love.
